Science Curriculum

Mr McArdle

Mr McArdle
Hello, I've been Science Lead since I joined the school 4 years ago. I love all the different areas of Science and watching the children learn lots of knew facts about the world around them and conduct a range of experiments.

How we teach our Science Curriculum

First area of interest...
Our science curriculum will inspire children to immerse themselves in the subject by raising their ambitions to study science further and raise their ambitions through introducing key scientists from the past and present. The science curriculum is progressive in order for children to develop a wide range of substantive and disciplinary knowledge across the school. The science curriculum is taught simply using careful planned units that break composites down into small steps. This enables the children to know and remember more and that all achieve in science.

Through the whole school, (from Nursery to Year 6) children learn and explore the biological world, which is the study of living organisms.

In our Nursery and Foundation Stage, we encourage our children to learn about the world around them by exploring the biological world through various role-play areas

In Key Stage 1 (Y1 & Y2) children learn about various topics such as living things and plants, habitats, animals including humans (feeding and exercise) and classifying plants and trees.  In Key Stage 2 (years 3-6) children learn more in-depth about animals, plants, habitats and classification of various animals and plants.  Key Stage 2 also learn about human digestion and teeth (year 4), life cycles (year 5) and evolution and inheritance in year 6.

Children learn how to work scientifically through conducting experiments, making predictions, measuring/observing and recording results, and concluding findings.  Children are given many opportunities to talk about what they know before learning a particular unit of work and then what they have learned at the end of each unit.

We make a point of explaining to the children that Scientists really enjoy getting things wrong and making incorrect predictions because they learn even more from their mistakes.

In Key Stage 1 (Y1 & Y2) children learn about various topics such as everyday materials and changing shape. In Key Stage 2 (years 3-6) children learn about rocks and soils, states of matter and properties of and changes to materials.

In Key Stage 1 (Y1 & Y2) children learn about each season and how they change from one to another. In Key Stage 2 (years 3-6) children learn about light and shadows, forces and magnets, electricity, sound, Earth and space and light.
