Foundation Stage 2

We pride ourselves in delivering the best possible education for all our pupils. Our learning environments are highly stimulating and inviting, and act as a catalyst for children to thrive in their development and learning. Via the highly engaging and broad curriculum we deliver, the team’s passion and dedication and our high standard of expectation, all learners succeed and achieve their full potential. As a result, Rossington’s EYFS achieves exceptional progress of achievement and attainment across the whole Early Years curriculum.

We currently have one F1 (Curious Cubs) and two F2 classes (Heroic Hedgehogs and Spectacular Squirrels). Our F1 is open to enrolment from the term after children turn 3 years of age. Please contact the school for more information.

Below are some more details regarding the curriculum we deliver.

FS1 and FS2 follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum Statutory Framework (2021). In essence, the EYFS Statutory Framework sets the bar in providing a challenging and engaging teaching and learning environment in order for children to develop across seven key areas of learning.

These are as follows:

3 Prime areas of learning

  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development
  • Personal, Social and Emotional development

4 Specific areas of learning

  • Literacy
  • Maths
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design

Each of these areas are subdivided and have their own Early Learning Goals against which children are assessed during the Summer term of the FS2 year.

The Early Years Framework also is characterised by 4 overarching principles. These four guiding principles shape practice in early years settings.

  • every child is a unique child, who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self-assured
  • children learn to be strong and independent through positive relationships
  • children learn and develop well in enabling environments with teaching and support from adults, who respond to their individual interests and needs and help them to build their learning over time. Children benefit from a strong partnership between practitioners and parents and/or carers.
  • importance of learning and development. Children develop and learn at different rates. (See “the characteristics of effective teaching and learning” at paragraph 1.15 in the Framwork). The framework covers the education and care of all children in early years provision, including children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). https://assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/974907/EYFS_framework_-_March_2021.pdf

To reflect these exemplifications, at Rossington, we place a great emphasis on encouraging our children to be independent learners right from the very beginning. Our creative and ambitious curriculum is delivered through half termly theme-based learning. However, as we endeavour to engage and motivate each and every individual child our environments and teaching are constantly adapted to ensure that we plan for and meet the needs and interests of all of our children. Embedded within our EYFS are the effective characteristics of inspiring children to play and explore; to become active learnings and to use their imaginations to create and be critical thinkers.

Across the F1 and FS2 classes, children will experience a combination of whole class teaching sessions, small group adult-led learning and well-planned purposeful child-initiated activities. Children move freely between the indoor and outdoor areas and are continually supported and challenged in their learning by all of our staff in our Foundation Stage Team.

As the children progress through their FS2 year the amount of structure during the sessions is gradually increased to ensure that all of our children are confident, independent learners ready to enter their next phase of education in Year 1!

Please view our long-term planning document to see a full breakdown of yearly schedule and our class pages to keep up to date with the progress through these themes during your child’s learning journey within our amazing Foundation Stage.

We look forward to our partnership in learning with you!
