Physical Education (PE)
PE Lead – Mr D Hart
At Rossington St Michael’s, we believe that Physical Education is an essential aspect of our curriculum to encourage and promote healthy and active lifestyles. In PE, we develop a wide range of skills and fundamental knowledge of a variety sports and disciplines throughout the key stages and years. Our curriculum ensures that skills are developed through topics such as invasion games, dance, gymnastics, swimming, athletics, outdoor and adventure and fitness. Skills gained from these topics are then applied to specific sports such as Netball, Football, Basketball, Rounders and Tag Rugby later on in Key Stage 2. In addition to this, we believe that an essential element of our curriculum is that children develop an understanding of a healthy lifestyle and will therefore make connections between physical health and a healthy mind to go on to adopt a healthy lifestyle into their adult life.
Our PE Scheme of learning progressively builds key knowledge and skills and is taught through challenging and enjoyable learning opportunities for all pupils. Our lessons balance elements of independent learning, team work, competition or creative opportunities which allow all pupils the opportunity to participate and flourish.
All children at St Michael’s have access to 2 hours of Physical Education a week. These lessons are delivered by class teachers.
Physical Education begins in EYFS by giving strong foundations to all pupils. The children have access to child-initiated continuous provision in our outdoor environment which strongly promotes physical development. Children have regular access to many activities through the year which are designed to promote physical development such as bike training. Children also have one formal PE lesson and a session from a visiting PE specialist.
Pupils at Rossington St Michael’s enjoy PE and look forward to their lessons. A range of after-school clubs is offered to the pupils to further extend those opportunities to children such as before school dance with 'Miss Hannah', gymnastics, fitness, hockey and football. We also regularly participate in local competitions.

PE Learning Journey 2024 - 2025
How we teach our PE Curriculum
Key Stage One:
Pupils should develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others.
They should be able to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.
Pupils should be taught to:
Master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities
Participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending
Perform dances using simple movement patterns.
Key Stage Two:
Pupils should continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement.
They should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They should develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
Pupils should be taught to:
Use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination
Play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending
Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics]
Perform dances using a range of movement patterns
Take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team
Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.
At St. Michael's, we provide swimming lessons for our children in Key Stage 2.
Pupils should be taught to:
Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
Use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
Aims
Our aims are to ensure that all pupils:
-
Can participate competently in a broad range of physical activities.
-
Are physically active for substantial periods of time.
-
Can engage in competitive sports and activities.
-
Are able to lead healthy and active lifestyles.
Knowing and understanding the context of our school and the community, we endeavour to provide our children with exposure to a broad range of concepts within the subject that widen their understanding of sports and activities to participate in. Our PE curriculum is designed so that children can build on their prior knowledge in concept areas. Recognising the impact of COVID and the health needs within the area, we want to inspire all children to move more for their wellbeing (both mental and physical). The curriculum is designed to raise the aspirations of the children so that all are able to achieve in the subject. To inspire children throughout the school, we highlight and celebrate athletes across all disciplines.
As a school, we aspire to make links with the wider community to be able to signpost children to providers externally if they wish. Children have the opportunity to participate in a variety of competitions (intra and inter) through the year. Within our PE curriculum, children are loved, accepted and welcomed through mutual respect and support for each other and being ‘cheer leaders’ for one another. The PE curriculum enables our children to feel a sense of individual and team achievement.
